Dogs and Fleas

Dogs are mostly an active pet and many of them love to play outside with the owner or by themselves and the fellow pets in the neighborhood. They are very social and when trained properly will be very gentle towards children and friendly towards even unknown people. However, due to their social nature and active life, we also have to deal with some parasites like fleas when they are often spending time outside, playing with nature or with another dogs that has been infested.

Flea is a common issue we have when having dogs and even when we are already paying much attention to these harmful insects, there will always be a way for them to infest our dogs because these pesky creatures can be found almost anywhere, in your garden, yard, on the neighbor’s dog or even in the house. Spotting them is also not the easiest thing to instantly do because depending on how thick your dog’s fur is, they can be concealed completely from our sight.

Not visible doesn’t always mean there is no flea in your dog’s fur and it is better to be prepared rather than late since it is very uncomfortable for our pets. To know whether they are infested or not is check if there is an obvious sign of them scratching their body persistently or sometime over grooming which most of the time will lead to shedding and exposed skin. What’s even dangerous is if they have flea allergy since it will give them scabs and irritated skin.

The first thing we have to do when there are fleas or ticks infesting our pets whether it is dogs or cats is treating the issue on their body first with available solution in the market that we can get from various pet shops. The solution form are varying from the oral medication to treatments that we can apply on their body but, one thing you have to keep in mind is when using topical application, don’t bathe them 4-5 days before and after application to deliver the best performance.

The second most important thing to do is treating the house because it is not effective when dealing with those in your pet’s nobody but the house still have them for they can attack your pet again. We can start by vacuuming every surface especially flooring and bed or sofas where there is possibility of the insects and in addition, before vacuuming you may want to sprinkle some borax into the carpet then leave overnight to kill them without relying on heavy chemicals.

Seresto Ingredient

Similar like any solution, our first attention when looking for a flea collar is the ingredients to do the job and deliver the benefit. Bayer made Seresto with two active ingredients called Imidacloprid (10%) and Flumethrin (4.5%). The first one is working by shutting down the nervous system of insects through stopping the individual nerves from sending signals while the latter is killing and repelling ticks in all life stage from nymph to adult by shutting down their central nervous system.

Seresto Working Mechanism

These two ingredients are working hand in hand and are actually stored inside the innovative “polymer matrix” of Seresto collar. It has several layers and the middle part contains the highest concentrating so it will be reduced once dispensed from this spot. As your dogs fur and skin is rubbing against the collar, the solution mix will also be released into their skin and then traveling to the rest of the body. The downside however, it will take some time before completely build up.

About Scalibor

A wise move is to always check the other options of your preferred products before shopping because we may find a better brand with better capabilities or even more affordable than our first option. Seresto is indeed a good flea collars but they are not the only one who offer the solution for Scalibor is also here to help pet owners protect their beloved animals from getting infested with fleas or ticks and let them play outside with an ease mind.

Scalibor is made by Merck and also one of the best rated flea collars out there and loved by many due to its effective performance. They are also quite affordable and one collar can be used for up to 6 months so we only need 2 every year for a proper protection against those harmful insects.

Scalibor Design

Unlike Seresto which packaging is inside a metal can or tin, this flea collar is coming inside a box similar to some medication we used to get from pharmacies or drug stores. One box has one collar inside and it is white in color with a locking mechanism on the tip. There is only one size for this collars and it is pretty long to accommodate bigger dogs and in case you already get one but have a small sized dogs, we can just cut one of the tips to shorten and fit them more properly.

Scalibor Ingredient

To be effectively working on killing fleas and repelling ticks, your Scalibor is also made with insecticide inside and for this brand, the one they used is Deltamethrin at 4%. The insecticide is coming from the parathyroid family or is synthetic and manmade to mimic the natural one which is derived from chrysanthemum flowers. When in direct contact or consumed by insects, the chemical will disrupt their normal nervous system function and killing them but the effects are not instant and we still have to give it some time to work.

Scalibor Working Mechanism

Similar to Seresto, Scalibor is also working by releasing the active ingredients from the physical collar itself and need to be in place for a few weeks or up to 6 months before we can change it again. It is releasing the active ingredient Deltamethrin into your dog’s fur and skin as it comes in contact with the skin through friction while moving. There is no warning on cat application and some people are fine using it for cats but Merck strongly limited the usage only for dogs above 12-weeks.

Now, let’s compare Seresto with Scalibor. As it has been mentioned above, both of them are highly rated and popular flea collar but are also different from the active ingredient being used, minimum age requirement, effectivity time, sizing options, and suitability for cats. Seresto have two active ingredients, can be used from 7 weeks old, effective for up to 8 months, have two sizes, and also offer the cat version.
